C.J. Beathard Suffers Thumb Injury in Win vs. Giants

During the San Francisco 49ers‘ 31-21 win over the New York Giants in Week 10, quarterback C.J. Beathard injured his right thumb.

Per Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, Beathard is expected to have an X-ray on his thumb soon.

Inman also noted that San Francisco’s offensive players were told Jimmy Garoppolo would be coming in after Beathard injured his thumb, but the rookie quarterback was able to fight through the pain to remain in.

There was no indication during the game that Beathard was injured. He played every offensive snap for the 49ers, finishing with 288 passing yards, 15 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.

The 49ers earned their first victory of the season against the Giants. Beathard, who was a third-round draft pick out of Iowa, took over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback when he replaced Brian Hoyer in Week 6 against the Washington Redskins.

What Will the Chicago Bears Look Like in 3 Years?

The Chicago Bears are under construction.

The project so far looks good under the direction of general manager Ryan Pace. A defensive-minded team for the time being, the front office made an aggressive move to get rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and set the tone for the rest of the rebuild over the next few years.

But what will these Bears look like in three years?

Remember, just a year ago the secondary looked completely different. Pace and the front office prioritized it and brought on four new starters before working in even more faces following injury.

Based on the current roster, which has surprised this year after a switch at quarterback, a few areas still need makeovers. Others will see age and performance alter things. And like anywhere else, the coaching staff is always up for review.

Let’s take a look at what these Bears should look like in three years.

Vontaze Burfict Ejected vs. Titans After Making Contact with an Official

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans after making contact with an official, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Jeremy Rauch of Fox 19 shared video of the incident:

Burfict then took his time heading to the locker room:

“Burfict made contact with the official after trying to make a tackle on Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota,” according to NFL.com. “He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and ejected. The penalty came two plays after he was given an unnecessary roughness penalty following a short run by Titans running back DeMarco Murray.”

It was the latest misstep for Burfict, who has a long list of suspensions and fines to his name. He was suspended the first three games of the season for a hit on Kansas City Chiefs running back Anthony Sherman in the preseason and was fined $12,154 in late October after he kicked Steelers fullback Roosevelt Nix.

He was also suspended for the first three games of the 2016 season following an illegal hit on Steelers wideout Antonio Brown in the 2015 postseason.

In August, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Burfict had been “fined almost $800,000 and flagged 16 times for unnecessary roughness, personal fouls or roughing the passer” in the first five years of his career.

Despite his history, Burfict maintained he isn’t a dirty player.

“There’s a fine line in football,” he recently told Andy Benoit of The MMQB. “And I think that I’m right at that line. Back in the day they’d probably say, ‘Vontaze Burfict, he’s a great linebacker.’ But rules change. Things change. The game changed. And I have to change with it. There’s multiple ways I’ve been changing with the game. There are plays where I could have hit somebody and I’ve let off, because obviously you get a flag in this day and age. Marvin [Lewis] has been helping. Coach G [Paul Guenther] has been helping me. Change with the game. And I’ll still be that dominant linebacker.”

Bowl Predictions 2017: Projecting CFP Playoff Field After Week 11 Games

There’s a day every year in the college football calendar where chaos erupts out of nowhere.

Saturday’s plethora of eye-popping results was full of turnover chains, cowbells and good ol’ fashioned beatdowns in heated rivalry games.

The teams who deserve to be in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday asserted their dominance across a day that blindsided some with performances few people saw coming.

Now the playoff committee has to make sense of all the madness by Tuesday, but no one wants to wait until then to figure out the top four.

Here’s who we think will be ranked in the first four positions of the College Football Playoff rankings after Week 11.

1. Alabama

No matter what your opinion may be of the Alabama Crimson Tide, they are the most likely candidate to claim the No. 1 position in the rankings.

The Crimson Tide struggled with Mississippi State on Saturday night, but ultimately Jalen Hurts came through in the clutch, and they left Starkville, Mississippi without a blemish on their resume. Hurts had last year’s National Championship on his mind during the closing stages of Saturday’s game, per Chandler Rome of the Anniston Star:

Misssissippi State put a game plan out there that could be replicated by Auburn in two weeks in the Iron Bowl. The Bulldogs controlled the pace with their run game and didn’t drift too far away from the tackle box while pushing the ball down the field.

Nick Saban will not be pleased with the performance of his team, but it was enough to keep it above all the other contenders for another week.

Saban and Co. have two weeks to prepare for Auburn and a game that will determine the SEC West champion and where both teams land during bowl season.

2. Miami (FL)

With all due respect to the rest of the top dogs in college football, the Miami Hurricanes have earned this position over the last two weeks.

A week after knocking off Virginia Tech, Mark Richt‘s Hurricanes demolished Notre Dame to remain undefeated on Saturday night. Richt responded diplomatically when he was asked about where his team belongs in the rankings after the game, per Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post:

The Miami defense stole the show by forcing four turnovers, one of which was an interception return for a touchdown.

Not only is Miami undefeated, but it now has two wins over top-15 teams in Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. But regardless of where you think the Hurricanes belong at the moment, their fate will be determined in the ACC Championship against Clemson.

3. Clemson

Clemson didn’t blow Florida State out of the water in Week 11, but it was able to close the game out after a late threat from the Seminoles.

When it comes down to comparing Clemson to Alabama and Miami, the difference that stands out the most is the number in the Tigers’ loss column. However, you can counter that with the four wins over ranked opponents on Clemson’s resume.

With Saturday’s win over Florida State, the Tigers became the second team in ACC history to advance to three consecutive ACC Championships, per ESPN Stats and Info:

Just like Miami, the final decision regarding Clemson will come down to the ACC Championship, which could end up being one of a few de-facto quarterfinal games on championship weekend, as college football writer Bryan Fischer pointed out:

4. Oklahoma

There’s going to be a lot of discussion, most of it on social media between fan bases, about who belongs in the No. 4 position on Tuesday.

By virtue of their win over TCU on Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners are the logical choice to slide in behind Alabama, Miami and Clemson. Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley believes his team is starting to play its best football right now, per Brooke Pryor of The Oklahoman:

There will be a contingent against Oklahoma in the top four because its loss to Iowa State looks worse now that the Cyclones have fallen out of the Big 12 picture. However, the Sooners have three wins over top-25 opposition and have back-to-back conference wins over ranked foes.

The arguments for undefeated Wisconsin and one-loss Georgia will be fierce, and in most aspects reasonable, but Oklahoma did nothing wrong in Week 11 to affect its standing in the playoff rankings.

Like we all know, a lot can change before the final rankings are announced, but until the Sooners drop another game, they’ll be on track to represent the Big 12 in the playoff.

49ers Earn 1st Win of Season with 31-21 Victory over Eli Manning, Giants

The 2017 San Francisco 49ers are in the win column.

Rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard led the 49ers to their first win of the season Sunday with a 31-21 victory over the hapless New York Giants at Levi’s Stadium. Beathard went 19-of-25 for 288 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and added a rushing score against a Giants defense that was a mere 29th in the league in points allowed per game entering Sunday’s contest.

While the 49ers were the team without a win, the struggles were more of the same for the 1-8 Giants. They were coming off a humiliating 51-17 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported multiple players criticized head coach Ben McAdoo after the defeat.

San Francisco is now 1-9 and no longer a threat to match the 2008 Detroit Lions’ 0-16 mark. The same cannot be said of this year’s Cleveland Browns, which fell to 0-9 Sunday with a loss to the Lions and overtook the 49ers for the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft.

Beathard shined Sunday, but he received important help from his rushing attack as well.

Carlos Hyde finished with 98 yards on 17 carries, while Matt Breida added 55 yards on nine carries, 33 of which came on a touchdown run in the fourth quarter to bust the game open:

After three combined field goals in the first quarter, the 49ers found the end zone first with an 83-yard connection from Beathard to Marquise Goodwin. While Eli Manning answered with a touchdown pass to Evan Engram to take the lead, Garrett Celek’s 47-yard touchdown catch right before halftime put the 49ers ahead for good.

The 49ers can relish their win with a bye in Week 11 and will look to build a winning streak in Week 12 with a matchup against the division-rival Seattle Seahawks. New York will turn its attention toward a Week 11 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lakers Rumors: Julius Randle Trade, Mindaugas Kuzminskas and More

The Los Angeles Lakers always seem to be in the spotlight. And that means they always seem to be at the center of the rumor mill, too, especially in a season leading up to a summer where the team is expected to make a major push in free agency.

Let’s break down the latest rumors below.

Julius Randle

Julius Randle may not be long for the Lakers. On Tuesday night during NBA Countdown, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said as much (h/t Jack Maloney of CBS Sports):

“One player whose future is very unlikely to continue with the Lakers is Julius Randle, their third year forward. Rob Pelinka, their general manager, and Magic Johnson, their president, will be faced with this question. Do they look to trade Randle between now and the February trade deadline and get back potentially a first-round draft pick for him, or do they roll the dice and wait until summer when he’s a restricted free agent.”

It isn’t hard to see why Randle may not be in the team’s future plans. For one, the team already has a promising young power forward in Larry Nance Jr. and has seen the emergence of rookie Kyle Kuzma at forward, who looks like the early steal of the 2017 NBA draft.

But if the Lakers are going to slash payroll this offseason to chase a few superstar free agents, they likely won’t be able to pay market value for players like Randle.

At one point, Randle was unquestionably a crucial part of the team’s young core. Now, players like Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Kuzma seem more likely to be the pillars the team hopes to build around for the future.

Dealing Randle this season rather than watching him sign a bigger contract the Lakers may not have the cap space to match this offseason is a logical potential outcome.

Mindaugas Kuzminskas

Mindaugas Kuzminskas, due to a lack of playing time with the New York Knicks, may be seeking a new destination this season.

The Lakers are a potential team to keep an eye on if he’s traded, per Marc Berman of the New York Post:

“Kuzminskas, a 3-point shooter who heard chants of ‘Kuuuz’ last season, has talked to his agent about his predicament. Sources indicated Kuzminskas‘ reps were gauging interest around the NBA.

“When he signed with the Knicks, there were four clubs that had interest, including the Lakers, Cavaliers and Hawks, according to sources. The Knicks have to make a roster move in mid-November when Joakim Noah returns from suspension. Kuzminskas has one year left on his pact at $3.8 million”

And Ian Begley of ESPN.com also reported that the Knicks were inquiring around the NBA for potential Kuzminskas‘ deals.

Kuzminskas, 28, averaged 6.3 points and shot 32.1 percent from beyond the arc in 14.9 minutes per game last season. It’s hard to imagine he’d crack L.A.’s rotation, however, with players like Randle, Kuzma, Ingram and Nance (when he returns from injury) all likely to get major minutes at the two forward spots.

Add in Corey Brewer and Luol Deng (more on him below), and the Lakers don’t exactly have a major need for Kuzminskas. Perhaps they still have interest, but Kuzma‘s emergence alone makes it hard to imagine them making a move for Kuzminskas without also getting rid of another forward or two from their current roster.

Luol Deng

The theme of “playing time” continues. Namely, Deng isn’t getting much of it, similar to Kuzminskas. And Deng, like Kuzminskas, wants out, as he told Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com:

“It definitely hurts. But the only answer for me now is to prove myself away from L.A. I’m not asked to play, I’m not in the rotation, so I can’t prove myself here.

“Most of these young guys don’t understand the business of basketball, so if I come in here and I’m angry every day, I’m taking something away from them. I have to be smiling, I have to be in the best mood I can be in, because they’re living their dream of being an NBA player.”

And Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times reported that Deng requested a trade or buyout after training camp concluded.

Deng is a byproduct of L.A.’s rebuild-gone-wrong in the final years of the Jim Buss-Mitch Kupchak partnership, signing a four-year, $72-million deal in the summer of 2016. The Lakers now likely need to free themselves from that contract if they hope to be major players in free agency, similarly to how they freed themselves from the four-year, $64 million they signed Timofey Mozgov that same summer.

Trading that contract may be more difficult than, say, moving a player like Randle. Regardless, it’s hard to imagine Deng finishing the season with the Lakers.

Giancarlo Stanton Trade Rumors: Cardinals, Red Sox, Giants, Phillies Interested

The Miami Marlins have reportedly already engaged in “preliminary communication” with multiple teams regarding a potential Giancarlo Stanton trade.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported the news Friday, noting the talks have occurred with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies. Morosi noted the conversations are “expected to intensify at” the general manager meetings in the coming week.

While Morosi also pointed to the Red Sox, he echoes a Thursday report from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

According to Heyman, St. Louis is a “prime player” for Stanton, while the Phillies and Giants are also interested. Heyman specifically pointed to the Cardinals, though, noting the Marlins would “most like” to deal with them because of pitching prospects such as Alex Reyes, Sandy Alcantara and Jack Flaherty.

While it may make little sense to trade a dynamic player like Stanton from a purely baseball perspective, Miami’s new ownership is reportedly looking to significantly cut payroll.

According to Barry Jackson and Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the new ownership—which includes New York Yankees great Derek Jeter—would like to cut payroll to $90 million. If it keeps the roster together as is, the payroll would be $140 million.

Trading Stanton would be a straightforward way to take a serious amount of cash off the books. The slugger made $14.5 million in 2017 but will collect at least $25 million in each of the next 11 seasons and has player options from 2021-27 and a club option in 2028, per Spotrac.

It will be a costly addition, but whichever team trades for Stanton will instantly bolster their lineup with a 28-year-old who slashed .281/.376/.631 with 59 home runs and 132 RBI in 2017.

Former Phillies, Blue Jays Pitcher Roy Halladay Dies in Plane Crash at Age 40

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay, who pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies, was killed in a plane crash at the age of 40 on Tuesday.

Per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Halladay was killed in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico.

Major League Baseball and the Phillies offered their condolences on Twitter after learning of Hallday’s death:

Halladay pitched 16 seasons in MLB with the Blue Jays and Phillies. He was a first-round draft pick by Toronto in 1995 and made his MLB debut on Sept. 20, 1998.

In 12 seasons with the Blue Jays, Halladay was named to the American League All-Star team six times and won the 2003 AL Cy Young Award. He was traded to Philadelphia after the 2009 season and won the National League Cy Young Award in his first year with the Phillies.

The Colorado native led all starting pitchers with 58.7 FanGraphs wins above replacement from 2002-11 and ranked fifth with a 2.97 ERA. He became the second pitcher in MLB history with a postseason no-hitter when he shut out the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS.

Halladay is one of six pitchers in MLB history to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. He also worked with the Phillies and Blue Jays as a guest instructor during spring training after retiring following the 2013 season.

Tony Allen Ruled Out vs. Clippers with Knee Injury

New Orleans Pelicans swingman Tony Allen will miss Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers with left knee inflammation, according to Pelicans.com’s Daniel Sallerson.

Allen, 35, is averaging 4.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.7 steals while shooting 50.0 percent from the field through his first 12 games in the Big Easy.

As those numbers indicate, the Pelicans won’t take a major hit in the scoring department with Allen out.

However, they will miss his pesky perimeter defense against a Clippers team that ranks fourth in the NBA in offensive rating (108.6) despite losing their last four games.

Since Allen has played 85 percent of his minutes at small forward so far this season, Dante Cunningham and Darius Miller should see the biggest boost in minutes so long as the veteran is sidelined.

Karim Benzema Says Cristiano Ronaldo Is ‘More Egotistical’ Than Him

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has said Cristiano Ronaldo is “more egotistical” than him, and the Frenchman suggested he looks worse in comparison to his club team-mate.

Per AS, he said on Canal Football Club: “Cristiano and I get on well and I like playing with him. He likes to play it first time. He is more egotistical than me but that’s normal, it doesn’t bother me. In the end, it’s good for the team.”

He added: “I score goals but when there is someone beside me who scores 50 goals a year… before, a striker would score 25 goals and he was a good striker, but now…”

The 29-year-old has found the net 183 times in 377 games for Los Blancos. Ronaldo, who joined Real at the same time in the summer of 2009, has scored a phenomenal 414 goals in 407 outings.

Benzema, who has struck just twice this season in a poor campaign thus far, has received some criticism for his strike-rate in the Spanish capital, most notably from Match of the Day host Gary Lineker:

Football journalist Rafael Hernandez believes the Frenchman is crucial to Real, though:

While he could perhaps stand to score more often, he’s still a prolific goalscorer and brings much more than that thanks to his chemistry with Ronaldo and selfless play.

Benzema reflected on the criticism he has received, specifically from supporters: “The criticism, the insults… it’s difficult. Especially in Spain, where there are times when you don’t understand everything they are saying to you. It hurts a lot in France too, especially when it affects your family.”

He added: “Football has a big impact. It’s difficult. I can contain myself but the most difficult is when your own fans are criticising you.”

Madridistas are notorious for jeering their own players when things aren’t going well, and even Ronaldo and other club legends have experienced their ire at times.

With France, Benzema has 87 caps, but he has not played for Les Bleus since 2015 after being arrested amid allegations he blackmailed international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape. He said:

“As long as [Didier] Deschamps is the manager of the team, I won’t be given an opportunity to return to the national side. Of course, I think about it, of course I do but it has been more than two-and-a-half years and you don’t have to be very smart. It’s not a question of him calling me or not, I had him on the phone before the Euros and he didn’t give me an explanation. He is someone who I respect, but he showed me a lot of respect before and after he turned his back on me. It hurts. When he wants to meet, we will meet.”

Benzema nevertheless expressed his desire to play at the 2018 World Cup and added he hopes “things can change in the future.”

Goal’s Mootaz Chehade gave his take:

Unfortunately for Benzema, the scandal and his subsequent exit from the team has come at a time when France have a great many attacking options with Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, Alexandre Lacazette, Kylian Mbappe and Anthony Martial vying for places, not to mention the likes of Kevin Gameiro and Andre-Pierre Gignac.

While he’s better than a number of those players, the array of strong alternatives gives Deschamps little need to bring Benzema back into the fold.

The striker is still only 29, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he may be able to resurrect his France career at some point, but it will undoubtedly be a disappointment in an otherwise excellent career.
